A detailed look at the six-month, competency-based training model behind Dream Sleep Center's Focused STAR program — designed to develop confident, job-ready sleep technologists through repeated clinical practice, not just classroom completion.

Program structure

Education is integrated with clinical experience.

Students do not complete the classroom portion and then hope they remember it months later. The curriculum is intentionally embedded across the six-month field experience.

Science, technical skill, patient care and safety.

Patient Information & Clinical AssessmentReview orders, history and comorbidities; select appropriate room/equipment.

Patient & Caregiver InteractionStructured orientation, sleep hygiene, PAP basics and age-appropriate communication.

Sleep Disorder ClassificationDifferentiate obstructive, central and mixed apnea and understand major sleep-disorder categories.

Support & PAP CompliancePAP desensitization, adherence concepts, troubleshooting and PAP-download fundamentals.

Technical PreparationPrepare the patient and equipment; perform reliable hookup and verify impedance under 5 kΩ.

CalibrationsComplete physiologic calibration and verify recording quality before lights out.

Procedures & Practice GuidelinesApply appropriate PSG, HSAT, MSLT and MWT protocols and understand study adjustments.

Sleep/Wake Physiology & PathophysiologyUnderstand normal sleep cycles and recognize important pathologic changes.

Recognize, Respond & DocumentIdentify artifacts and abnormal patterns, troubleshoot signals and document events in real time.

Adult PSG ScoringDevelop adult scoring performance toward at least 85% inter-scorer reliability.

Report GenerationPrepare a complete technologist summary including AHI, RDI, total sleep time and hypnogram information.

Final capstone

Can you run the study?

Program completion requires both academic and hands-on demonstration.

Complete the PSG

Intake and assessment, 10–20 hookup, impedance verification, calibration, monitoring, artifact correction, documentation and lights-on/lights-off procedures.

Complete the technical work

Preliminary scoring and report-draft work sufficient to demonstrate understanding of the study from acquisition through technical summary.

Pass the cumulative exam

Spriggs-based chapter testing plus mock RPSGT-style, scenario-driven questions, followed by program-director completion sign-off.

Six-month vs short-course training

The difference is repeated clinical exposure.

Shorter programs can provide important foundational education. Dream intentionally adds prolonged field experience and repeated competency verification.

Credential pathway

Education is one part of becoming registered.

BRPT currently lists Dream Sleep Center as STAR provider F020 · Focused. BRPT's current RPSGT Pathway 4 includes qualifying STAR education plus a minimum of 960 qualifying clinical hours and the other current application requirements. CPSGT has a separate Focused Training pathway.

Dream's program is structured to combine Focused STAR education with 960+ hours of clinical field experience, but BRPT — not Dream Sleep Center — makes the final eligibility and credentialing decision.
